Gabon, Provinces

If you are intending to go to Gabon and are clueless about the country itself, do not worry, this geographic post will give you the minimum required knowledge about the Gabonese provinces. 

First of all, Gabonese provinces are coded in the format G-number helping people the government to easily allocate relevant data from them, especially when establishing identity documents.

G1- Estuaire

Estuaire (French word for Estuary) is the province where is located the Capital Libreville with its Leon Mba international airport. From the Libreville, it is easy to reach the rest of the entire country.
The Estuaire province gathers mostly two principal Ethnic Tribes: The Fang, and the Myene.

G2 - Haut Ogooué


The Haut-Ogooué whose capital is franceville is a province known for its high lands known as "plateaux batéké" and its famous canyon of Lecony.

The Main cities are Franceville (Province's Capital) and Moanda, the industrial city where you will find the 3rd world's greatest Manganese ore deposit. 
The main local tribes are Teke, Ndoumou, Obamba.


G3 - Moyen Ogooue
The Ogooue river passes trough Lambarene which is the capital of this province. It is also worldy known to be the city where the famous Doctor Albert Schweitzer spent a consideral part of his career building the Albert Schweitzer Hospital there. The main local tribes are essentially Fang and Myene.

G4 - Ngounie

Mouila is the capital and main city of this province whose main tribes are Bandjabi, Bakélé, Nzébi, Mitsogho

G5 - Nyanga

The province capital is Tchibanga , the major local tribe is Punu. This province reflects the beauty of the gabonese nature as a whole.

G6 - Ogooué Ivindo

With its incredible equatorial forest, this province offers a rich natural content. With Makokou as capital, the province's main tribes are Bakota, Fang.

G7 - Ogooué Lolo

Koulamoutou is the capital, the city can be reached via the national railway, (Setrag) allowing to enjoy the Gabonese Landscape. The Major local tribe is Nzebi.

The Capital Port Gentil is the industrial and economical Capital of the country, having several Oil orientated companies that are listed in the major worlwide stock exchange such as Total (French Cac 40), Shell (mostly located in Gamba) Addax Petroleum Etc. The Major Tribes are Myené, Punu.

G9 - Woleu Ntem

A province rich in culture, the only province where only one tribe lives, The Fang tribe. With a rich forest and an amazing cultural content, this province is the northern boarder of Gabon.
